Hi and welcome to the very first Slightly Altered post!
I used to do a lot of writing in college, most of it relating to literature because my undergrad was in English. You can imagine a lot of essays on novels, classical and contemporary, and short stories, lots of Shakespeare. I knew I wanted to be an English major when I was a kid, there was no doubt in my mind about it. I loved reading and writing so why not spend four years studying it.
And then I graduated.
Suddenly all writing and reading, which I had until this point defined as part of my core being, was out the window as I looked for work. I needed money and for all my studying, I struggled to find paid work in my degree.
So a long hiatus from writing, and only casual reading, began. I found opportunities to write in my corporate job, which was nice to dust off the old skillset, but it was still pretty limited.
But now, whether it’s something about entering a new decade of my life, or finding contentment but not exactly growth in my career, or just finally remembering some of the core things that make me, me--I’m back to writing.
Along the way, I have continued to read and also become less ashamed of how much TV I consume and realized that these are things I want to write about. I hate finishing something and then it’s just over. Writing can give new life to it and allow time to synthesize and examine everything consumed. Which is exactly what I plan to do.
I chose Slightly Altered because I am a true believer that people change. Maybe not in drastic ways, but incrementally, over time. Books, media, and lived experiences are often the reasons for these shifts. I am different after finishing something, maybe not in dramatic ways, but in a way nonetheless. Examining these learnings and observations from those three things are my reasons for starting this.
I’m still learning as I go and overall I want this to be fun and enjoyable for me and you. I really am excited for what’s to come.
Some topics I have coming up:
Productivity is ruining life—a book analysis/review
My first surgical experience that was totally against my will
